Lockout/Tagout

Any device that uses positive means, such as a lock, blank flanges and bolted slip blinds, to hold an energy-isolating device in a safe position, thereby preventing the energizing of machinery or equipment. Lockout is one way to control hazardous energy. Lockout is the isolation of energy from the system (a machine, equipment, or process), which physically locks the system in a safe mode.

Circuit Breaker Lockout
Circuit breakers are automatically operated electrical switches that are specifically designed to protect electrical circuits from damage that is caused by overload or short circuit. The basic function of a circuit breaker is to detect a fault condition and automatically open the circuit. It is often used as a manual energy-isolation device by manually placing it in the OFF position.

Lockout Hasp & Padlock
The lockout hasp and padlock is a safety procedure that is used in the industry and research settings to ensure that dangerous machines are properly shut off and not able to be started up again prior to the completion of maintenance or servicing work. It requires that hazardous energy sources be “isolated and rendered inoperative” before work is started on the equipment in question.
